Every issue of The New Yorker includes eight small vignettes. Their purpose is to lighten up text-only pages. The vignettes may follow a theme, often connected to the issue’s subject matter. Sometimes the spots tell a story: a series of graphic pictograms that, combined, form a wordless comic strip.
